Mathematics and AI
The world of mathematics has been shocked in recent weeks by the sudden deluge of proofs being created by AI.
Things really blew up with the apparent cracking of the Navier-Stokes problem, and then went to another level when OpenAI dumped hundreds more proofs simultaneously on October 6.
As the creator of Numberphile, I have endeavoured to interview key people about what it means.
I’ve created a playlist here which will be updated in due course… But below are some important videos.
First, here’s “the world’s greatest living mathematician” Terence Tao (*):
Another Fields Medalist, this time Hugo Duminil-Copin:
Fellow math YouTuber Grant Sanderson is also worth speaking to:
And here’s a video with Tony Padilla about the Navier-Stokes proof itself:
And then Tristan Buckmaster, considered by some to be a victim (and hero) of the Navier-Stokes situation:
I’ve not been successful getting an interview with OpenAI yet!
(*) not a title Terence Tao uses and impossible to define, but that doesn’t stop people!
